Material Standards Cross-Reference: Grade Mapping Guide
A material standards cross reference keeps your spec valid across three markets. ASTM, EN and JIS name similar materials differently. A European buyer, an American buyer and a Japanese buyer may quote three grades for one steel. This page maps the grades we stock and process, side by side.
About This Platform
Cangzhou Xinjiuxinji Import And Export Co., Ltd. is the export arm of the group. It was registered in 2022. It serves the group factory established in 1999 in Nanpi, Hebei. All grades below are procured with mill documentation. Every material standards cross reference here is checked against that documentation.
Carbon & Structural Steel
| Use | ASTM / AISI (US) | EN (EU) | JIS (Japan) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Structural plate | A36 | S235JR (EN 10025-2) | SS400 (JIS G3101) |
| General cold forming | 1008 (A1008 SS) | DX51D (EN 10139) | SPHC (JIS G3131) |
| Deep drawing | 1008 SGCE (A1008) | DX53D (EN 10139) | SGCD (JIS G3302) |
A36, S235JR and SS400 are the structural workhorses. DX51D and SPHC are the general forming grades. DX53D and SGCD are the deep-drawing grades. If your spec names one, we can source the equivalent with data.
Galvanized Sheet
| Use | ASTM (US) | EN (EU) | JIS (Japan) |
|---|---|---|---|
| General purpose | A1008 SG | S250GD+Z / S350GD+Z (EN 10346) | SGCC (JIS G3302) |
| Deep drawing | SGCE-type (A1008) | DX51D+Z (EN 10346) | SGCD (JIS G3302) |
Coating mass follows EN 10346 notation. Z275 means 275 g/m² per side, for example. Z100 is a lighter coating for indoor parts. Confirm the Z value when the service is outdoors.
Stainless Steel
| Type | ASTM (US) | EN (EU, EN 10088-2) | JIS (Japan, G4305) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Austenitic 18/8 | 304 | X5CrNi18-10 (1.4301) | SUS304 |
| Austenitic with molybdenum | 316 / 316L | X5CrNiMo17-12-2 (1.4401) | SUS316 |
| Ferritic | 430 | X10Cr17 (1.4016) | SUS430 |
304 and 316 cover most custom stainless work. 316 adds molybdenum for chloride environments. 430 is the economy ferritic grade. Passivation per ASTM A967 is available for hygiene applications.
Aluminum
| Use | US designation | EN (AW) | JIS (H3100) |
|---|---|---|---|
| General purpose | 1060 / 1100 | AW-1060 / AW-1199 (nearest) | – |
| Corrosion-resistant sheet | 5052 | AW-5754 (nearest) | A5052 |
| Structural and CNC parts | 6061 | AW-6060 (nearest) | A6061 |
“Nearest” means the standard cross-reference alloy in that system. 5754 and 5052 behave nearly identically in forming. 6060 and 6061 match for most structural uses. Always state the temper (H14, T6, O) in the spec.
Temper & Condition Notation
Temper codes describe how the metal was conditioned. The same alloy behaves differently across tempers.
| Material | Temper | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| 5052 / 5754 | H14 | Hard |
| 5052 / 5754 | H32 | Medium-hard |
| 5052 / 5754 | O | Soft, best for forming |
| 6061 / 6060 | T6 | Heat treated and artificially aged |
| 6061 / 6060 | T4 | Heat treated, naturally aged |
State the temper in your spec. We confirm availability and forming behavior with the mill data.
How to Read a Full Material Spec
A complete callout has five parts, in this order:
- Standard number – EN 10346, ASTM A1008 or JIS G3302.
- Grade – S350GD, 1008 or SGCC.
- Condition or temper – +Z275, H14, T6, O.
- Finish – galvanized, passivated, anodized or painted.
- Tolerance class – ISO 2768-1 m, or drawing callouts.
Example: “S350GD+Z275, EN 10346, ISO 2768-1 m.” That is one unambiguous spec. “Galvanized steel sheet, about 1.5 mm” is not.
Mill Certificates & Compliance Documents
- EN 10204 Type 3.1 is our standard delivery certificate.
- Type 3.1 is certified by the manufacturer’s quality authority.
- Chemical and mechanical data come from the mill.
- RoHS reports are available for most stock materials.
- REACH declarations can be prepared on request.
- Certificates ship with the matching purchase-order batch.
- English certificates are the default document language.
Grade Selection by Application
The matrix below is a starting point, not a substitute for engineering review.
| Application | Recommended family | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Automotive bracket | S350GD / A1008 SG | Strength plus corrosion protection |
| Medical housing | 304 (1.4301) | Hygiene, passivable surface |
| Marine hardware | 316 (1.4401) | Molybdenum resists chloride attack |
| Electrical enclosure | 5052 (AW-5754) | Formability plus corrosion resistance |
| Structural frame | A36 / S235JR / SS400 | Cost, weldability, availability |
| High-draw cups | DX53D / SGCD | Low yield, high elongation |
Use the tables above as your material standards cross reference for the next RFQ.
Grade Confusions We Resolve Daily
- A36 vs 1008: A36 is plate, 1008 is sheet. Same steel, different product form.
- DX51D is the material name. S250GD is the delivery grade. They describe the same sheet.
- 304 vs 316: both austenitic. 316 adds molybdenum. Pick by environment, not by habit.
- 5052 vs 6061: 5052 forms, 6061 machines and welds. Different jobs, different alloys.

FAQ
Can you match a grade I cannot source locally?
Send the standard and grade. We confirm the mill equivalent with test data.
Do certificates match each shipment?
Yes. EN 10204 Type 3.1 follows the matching purchase-order batch.
Can you supply 316L instead of 316?
Yes, where low carbon is required (1.4404). State the L in the spec.
How do you handle a mixed-grade PO?
Each line carries its own grade, certificate and finish. We do not blend lots across lines.
What documents do you provide per PO?
EN 10204 Type 3.1 certificate, packing list and labels. RoHS reports on request.
Can you supply to EN 10025 instead of ASTM?
Yes. State the EN grade and condition. We match it to the mill’s current batch.
