Common Grades of Stainless Steel

——Which one should you choose?

Not all stainless steels are the same. Choosing the appropriate shell grade depends on the usage environment, mechanical properties, and budget. Here are the three most commonly used grades:

304 stainless steel

The most widely used austenitic stainless steel has excellent corrosion resistance, formability, and strength.

It is the preferred choice for kitchen equipment, food processing, storage tanks, and general fabrication. It performs well in indoor environments and low-pollution conditions.

316 stainless steel

Referred to as “marine-grade” stainless steel, it contains 2-3% molybdenum. It has significantly stronger resistance to chloride and acidic environments.

It is the second most commonly used grade after 304. It is often used in food industry equipment, surgical instruments, marine engineering, and chemical processing fields.

💡If your shell will be exposed to saltwater, chemicals, or strong cleaning agents, 316 is undoubtedly a better choice.

430 stainless steel

Ferritic, with an alloy content lower than 304. It has good corrosion resistance in mild atmospheres and is often used for high-polished decorative items.

It is cheaper than 304 and 316, but is not suitable for corrosive environments. It is commonly found in household appliances, automotive decorations, and architectural finishes.

Each brand has its own advantages and limitations. The correct choice depends on your specific working conditions, performance requirements, and cost considerations.

Three Real Project Cases

Case One: Outer shell of the testing instrument

The client is a manufacturer of food testing equipment and requires a corrosion-resistant, easy-to-clean casing that meets food-grade hygiene standards. The shape is a 60-120 mm cube with a wall thickness of 0.6-1.2 mm.

Previously, the supplier’s weld seams were rough, and the surface treatment did not meet the standards. The equipment frequently retained stains in the clean workshop, which affected the detection accuracy.

What did we do?

  • 304 food-grade stainless steel with sandblasted & polished surface meets hygiene requirements.

– Made of 304 stainless steel, with matte finish polishing treatment, enhancing corrosion resistance
