A Real Case

Project background


An outdoor lighting company was entrusted with a coastal landscape project in Southeast Asia and needed to customize a large quantity of stainless steel lampshades. The local climate was humid and salty, with extremely high corrosion risks. Due to budget considerations, the customer initially chose 304 stainless steel.

Project challenges

After receiving the drawings, our engineers pointed out that 304 would not provide sufficient corrosion resistance when exposed to the long-term coastal environment in Southeast Asia. It was expected that severe corrosion would occur within 6 to 9 months after installation.

We voluntarily provided two sets of samples, 304 and 316, to help the customer conduct simulation tests.

The results were clear: 304 was severely rusted, while 316 remained intact. The customer eventually abandoned 304 and fully switched to 316.

  • 5,000 lamp housings will rust and be scrapped within half a year.
  • The labor and coordination costs for replacing them at high altitudes and in water areas are much higher than the value of the parts.
